Hobbs Community Garden has been awarded a grant from the People’s Postcode Lottery and Groundwork Grassroots grants programme.

We’d like to say a huge thank you Groundwork and the People’s Postcode Lottery for the Grassroots Grant we’ve been awarded of £1955.26.

Our welcoming community garden is based in West Sussex was established in 2025 by Bridgette Macilwaine and Pamela Godfrey.

Rooted in the 3 core principles of earth care, people care and fair share, and we are so delighted to receive this grant, which will help us to continue our renovation and creation of this vital green space for our local community.

Our mission is simple yet powerful, rooted in three core principles:

  • Earth Care – Nurturing local biodiversity, championing organic gardening and growing with a sustainable mindset.

  • People Care – Varying spaces to grow food, enhance wellbeing, socialize, share skills, and to connect with nature.

  • Fair Share – Connecting to local schools to inspire the next generation, sharing with local food banks and collaborating with local businesses and community groups.

We’re dedicated to fostering community cohesion, local resilience, and a greener future, to show what can be achieved when passionate volunteers collaborate to create something extraordinary, to prove that sustainability, productivity and beauty go hand-in-hand.

The Grassroots Grants programme, which is a partnership between People’s Postcode Lottery and Groundwork, has helped 400 small, local organisations in England through unrestricted funding that supports the important work organisations deliver in their communities. The funding offered is unrestricted and therefore flexible. It can be used where it is most needed.

The grant programme is made possible thanks to funds raised by players of People’s Postcode Lottery and is awarded through Postcode Local Trust, Postcode Places Trust, Postcode Neighbourhood Trust and Postcode Society Trust.

“Our Community Garden is a vital asset for the local community. It’s been incredible to see the outpouring of support we’ve received so far, from generous material donations, invaluable advice and passionate volunteers rolling up their sleeves and helping out in the garden over the past few months. We hope this garden will contribute to creating a more resilient and connected community for many years to come” - Bridgette Macilwaine

Laura Chow, Head of Charities at People’s Postcode Lottery, said: “We are delighted that players of People’s Postcode Lottery will support small community-based organisations through this funding opportunity, thanks to our partnership with Groundwork UK. I encourage smaller, local charities and groups to visit our trust websites for more details.”

The People’s Postcode Lottery Grassroots Grants Fund is administered by the national community charity, Groundwork.

Graham Duxbury, Groundwork’s UK Chief Executive, said: “The value of locally led action is second to none when it comes to making lasting positive change in the communities which need it most. Unrestricted funding for small organisations with expert local knowledge and lived experience is a key component to ensuring communities can take control of their own destinies, and we’re pleased to be working with the Community Programmes team at People’s Postcode Lottery to provide this.”
